About Bechstein Piano
It was in 1853 that Carl Bechstein realised that musicians were searching for Grand Pianos that will suit both robust virtuoso playing and the more delicate touch. His expertise and understanding about musical trends of the time enabled him to develop the C Bechstein concept of action and sound. He went on to win gold medals at the London International Exhibition in 1862. In 1880, a second factory was built in Berlin and a third in 1897. His sons took over the leadership of the company. They opened the Bechstein Hall in London and offered more than 300 concerts per year During the Second World War, this hall was renamed to Wigmore Hall.
The British and American bombardment destroyed the production facilities in Germany during World War II. Since Bechstein was located in the American Sector in 1945, the US Administration confiscated the company. In 1954, the company built new production plants in Karlsruhe and Eschelbronn and the Baldwin Piano Company took over Bechstein shares.
It was during the 1980s that the market for grand pianos grew tighter in Europe and Baldwin Piano sold its Bechstein shares to German entrepreneur Dr. Karl Schulze. In time, there were new production facilities in Berlin-Kreuzberg and Euterpe and W. Hoffmann, two formerly Berlin-based companies, were bought out.
Bechstein went public in 1996 and by 2006 opened eight exquisite C. Bechstein showrooms throughout Germany. Most recently, Bechstein took over the partnerhsip of Bohemia (the Czech Piano manufacturer) in 2007.
